I was thinking about something today. I got distracted by, I don't know, pretty colors or something, who knows. Point is, I got distracted and forgot what I was thinking about. Then I tried to think of what it was that distracted me, and obviously I don't know what it was (or I would have told you), so I failed on that count, too. Then I tried to think about what I was thinking about before the distraction, and realized "Oh yeah, I forgot that I forgot that". And so there I was, not back to where I started, but completely off the track entirely. And yes, I know that using "completely" and "entirely" in the same sentence is a bit much. I'm simply trying to demonstrate how far off track I was.
Is there a point to all of this, you ask? Well, no, now that you mention it. Forget I said anything (I will too).
